Question So...

I have found a couple of trucks that I would like to get. But one of them has 162K miles on it! Do you guys think that, that might be a risk for me? (getting a truck with that many miles on it) Please let me know!

Yes. Even the best maintained vehicles will have some issues at that mileage. Kind of explains why they are so much cheaper than a newer vehicle.

Agreed...To keep maintainence issues down, you're gonna want to get a lower mileage, probably even newer vehicle. Most vehicles also lose "reliability" with age, not just high mileage(Even though my 76 has higher mileage and is 25 years older than my '01 and seems more reliable lol)....Just something to think about!

Question

It is a 1990 F-150 but in the newspaper it says that it is reliable! umm.... if is or not is the question but yet I have to take what I can get because of the money situation, but I am definately going to go take a gander at it!!! (Just to make sure whether or not I should consider buying it)

My best friend has an 86 F150 with a 302. He has had to replace the fuel injectors once, shortly after he got it, but has had no problems since. That truck, when he got it, had well over 120,000 miles and he has put a ton of miles on it since. The engine probably needs bearings, because the oil pressure drops to rediculous lows after it's well warmed up. He is the kind of driver who, no matter what the weather, starts the engine and is in gear and moving before it's even up to a decent idle. He does change the oil regularly...I think. Otherwwise... this truck is like that famous little bunny...it just keeps going and going and going. When he got the truck, the body was in nice shape, but in my opinion, it had been driven hard and put away wet..so to speak. Five years ago we talked about maybe rebuilding the engine....but it hasn't died yet..so why bother, eh? If it aint broke, don't fix it is his motto.

With as many miles as the truck has that you are looking at... I'd have someone you trust look it over real well and listen to the engine before buying it. You just might end up with a truck that will last like my buddie's or one that lasts until you get just far enough away from the previous owners house to not be able to push it back into the yard.

If the engine is the ol' 300 6, you should encounter too many problems untill around (but not limited to) 200-250k miles, or so I have heard. My brother got a '96 in march and no problems besides a thermostat and a coolant reservoir and he has around 100k.

It depends on the individual vehicle...I don't really believe that reliability goes down with age, it all depends on the vehicle, how it has been maintained, how it has been drove, etc... I bought an '89 olds 88 with 275,000 miles on it for $1 (didn't run at the time), it now has 293,000 and still going strong...the 3.8 GM V-6 is a very good engine. I put about 1,500 miles on per month with 300 mile trips at a time, and feel that it is a very reliable vehicle. I believe that a reliable vehicle can be had at a reasonable cost, just have to look them over carefully. Learn what to look for, or take someone who does with you to look at it.
