Here's the nightmare...

So I have a 1994 F-150 Flareside which now displaces a sweet 460 coming through the hood and I can't get the right starter for it. I've already cut a foot out of the frame and have fabricated a makeshift jig to hold the frame where it is. The problem is no matter how much I trim off of the starter, my headers won't fit. I'm using a set of Hedman headers that I've already welded header cutouts on and ceramic coated so I'd rather not cut them. I bought a starter with a solenoid on top knowing I didn't need another solenoid since mine is on the firewall and now I'm up against a wall unless somebody knows of the EXACT starter I should use for this swap. Shoe-horning a 460 into a 94 F-150 was tough enough but this is killing me. Should I just buy the $160 high torque mini starter with the eighteen hole adjustability and the solenoid on bottom or hang it up and install a huge pull starter rope? Once again, thanks for your input and time!

Hate to tell ya, but bite the 160 dollar bullit, a mini starter is your best choice without cutting the headers----

Harley has a big kick starter, that would be easier then a rope, but you better be one big dude.

Jezz, guys, don't get carried away - ford built a starter crank for their trucks - was standard in the Model T's, and an option for the Model A trucks. Just get one of those and drill a hole through your core support!

I'd get one from a late 70s truck with a 400 in it... same starter, no solenoid on it... shouldn't be more than $40.

unfortunately the starters without the solenoid on it will not work unless you also get the bellhousing from the older truck also. and if you go that route getting a new bellhousing then you would have to get one from an 84-90 whatever so you can retain the hydraulic clutch wich you might have to get the older slave cylinder also to mount on the bellhousing. but then I'm assuming you're using the zf transmission so you're kinda sol on that front also.

Sorry, guys. I should have mentioned the tranny is a 74 model C6 automatic. Thanks again for your input!

Then the 400 starter should work...

yea definitely try the one from a 74, did you have any problem's with the header's hitting the side of the tranny? I'm just wondering because when I did a swap like that and originally was trying to use a 78 bellhousing (manual transmission) I had a problem with the bell itself hitting.
either way the one starter that you describe with the solenoid on top of it is what is offered originally on that truck if you had the late model tranny. it shouldn't even bolt up to your bellhousing(and if it will it definitely won't line up with the flexplate properly) definitely go with the older starter.
good luck

P.S. if that starter doesn't work and you're willing to sell your current header's and buy new one's (probably not) Hooker's 6911-hkr or 6911-1hkr would work
