i have to find out which rear end i have to get new brake drums. they tell me it either has a sterling 60 or sterling 70. i looked for a tag on the cover and could not find one. the door label says axle code 52 and it is a 94 e350 176 wb cutaway w 460 e4od
That would be a Dana 60 or Dana 70, probably the 70 since it is a one-ton cutaway chassis. Is it a dually? The Sterling axle is a Ford (Visteon) product. Vans seem to use the Dana axles instead of the Sterlings. Most Dana axles have the model number cast into the housing just below the sheetmetal cover to the right side, if I remember it correctly. Either that or the left. This is when you are looking at the back of the axle from the rear of the vehicle. The code you found may be in the 'tech articles' section of this website under 'axle decoders'. The codes for pickup trucks are listed there, not sure about vans.
actually i misquoted autozone because they call it a spicer and i did see a dana logo on the cover, but it was to dirty to see any casting #s or tag.
it is a dually
will the model# on the differential either be the 60 or 70 or do i have to cross refernence that model#?
thanks
If it's a dually, it's not a Dana 60. The Dana 70 was used in duallies. The '60' or '70' should be cast into the housing center section web extending from the part where the axle tube joins the center housing. There should also be a Bill of Materials number stamped into the upper part of the tube, not too far from the center housing, either on the left or right side (dont remember). That number is 6 or 7 digits long and can be looked up on the Dana website: www2.dana.com/expert, under the light axle section. The BOM # provides info on what kind of axle it is and what kind of truck it came from as well as the year of manufacture.
