Speedometer Problems on Subaru

In 1998 my wife bought a new Forester. I tried to get her in a Ford but wasn't successful.

Anyway, the problem. The speedometer only works sporadically. Mostly not working. I know that it could be the speed sensor or the speedometer or a number of other things. If it was my '93, I'd just get a speed sensor, plug it in and see if it worked. However, one of the "joys" of foreign vehicle ownership is the price of parts. The VSS for this unit is priced at over $100.

Also, I've found that failure of the VSS doesn't necessarily throw the check engine light. The CEL came on once, but it was probably over a year ago and probably no longer stored.

I tried a couple of Subaru boards but, in general, it appeared that most of those folks were more concerned with exhaust pipes and couldn't find their way out of an empty room. I decided to post here where the truly knowledgeable folks reside.

Thanks for any input.
