Maybe it's just me, but a "4.0" should have more power than my Ranger does. I've driven 4-bangers that were faster. Why are they so slow? I could only imagine what a 3.0 is like. What's the best way to increase power on these things? I'm thinking exhaust, chip, and possibly camshaft?
Doing a search of your other posts I see you have a 94 , not sure if 4x4 or not or cab configuration. I also saw that you had a cracked head, which could be the answer to your lack of power. I think my 93 4.0 has plenty of power, even before modding it. There is no 4x4 4 banger that is even close to it in low end torque. Maybe a 2wd reg cab short box 4 banger could keep up with a pre 2001 4.0 4x4 super cab ranger, but that's the only way a 4 cylinder would even come close to competing with a good running 4.0. As far as more power, the standard intake, exhast and chip will produce very nice power improvements. A cam might be good, but will probably require a custom tuned chip which are getting harder to have done on 96 and older vehicles.
Yes I do have a 94, extra cab w/short bed. I put a new head on, and compression is excellent in all cylinders so I know the motor is in good shape. As far as power goes, it just feels pretty "flat" to me. Maybe it's just cause I'm coming from the world of V8's though. I don't know how much the Ranger weighs, but I know my little 93 subaru legacy is quicker. I also know someone with a 94 Isuzu Trooper w/3.2, and even that feels like it has more power when I drive it. Anyway, I've already ordered an exhaust for the Ranger, and I'll probably buy the chip too even though it's expensive. That should be good for a few more horses at least.
I have a 98 regular cab 4x4, with the 3.0, and a 5-speed. It tips the scales at a crazy 4,050 lbs. I thought that seemed pretty heavy for such a small truck, but I've been on probably 3 different scalles, and its always about 4400 lbs with me in it. So minus me (about 220), and then all my junk i'm hauling around (toolbox and tools, and what not), puts it at probably 4,050. And yes, the 3.0 is pretty dang slow. Especially since i have large 265/75-16 M/T tires and 3.73 gears. I'd bet it's safe to say that its about the slowest accelerating thing on the road. Even my piece of total crap, $100, 1989 cavalier 4cyl. with a 3-speed auto (really, only 2, cause 2nd is gone) can beat it. lol But I don't care. I love the truck. It's been really reliable, it's fun off-road, and on-road.
Has anyone else had there truck on a scale? Just wondering if yours weighed in like mine????
I weighed it about 3 years ago when I first got the truck. I'm thinking that with me in it that it was about 4200 lbs, putting the truck at around 4000 lbs. Shaner74, which chip were you looking at? The Diablo is what I have. It's only $199 @ motorhaven. THe Diablo seems to be the best value and gives the best power gains. I would guess with all 3 mods, I'm pulling an extra 20-25 HP or so. Very noticeable. Does much better in the higher RPM's now, but like I said, I've never thought it felt weak.
Here's a link to an intake that isn't too expensive and I've heard good things about. http://www.ifab.net/products/93intake/index.html
