torque converter question

We changed out a 302 with a 351 and now we are changing out the trannys as the c4 just didn't handle the power. Now my question is this "the transmission(which came out of the same 85 ford van as the engine did) inner shaft is to big for the torque converter. When we pulled the engine the van ran fine with the torque converter and tranny. Im pretty sure the inner shaft controls the pump to circulate the fluid but i could be wrong. Can someone please clarify this for me and do I need to find a different torque converter. All help is appreciated.

I don't understand - is this the same converter that was running with this transmission? If so, how is it too big?

Also, there are some dogs that must mesh into the main pump of the tranny - if they do not mesh, the input shaft will seem too ling.

btw, all you wanted to ever learn about torque converters -- http://www.tciauto.com/tech_info/tor..._explained.htm

yes it is the same that came out of the tranny but the inner shaft calls for a wider hole than what the torque converter has
