rear end size?

Got another one for you guys. I know I'm kinda working backwards here but thanks for bearing with me. OK I found out what the best gears for my truck are, now how do I find out for sure what size my rear end is. I think it's 9.75, but it could possibly be an 8.8, its on a 98 F-150. Thanks.

The 9.75" looks very similar to the 10.25" and 10.50" rear ends used in the F250 & 350 trucks and has 12 cover bolts and more of a Dana-like shape to the cover than the 8.8. The 8.8" cover shape is more square with rounded off corners and has 10 cover bolts. This website has pictures of lots of axles, including the Ford axles in question: www.precisiongear.com/fordring.htm.

The VIN and weight sticker on the driver's door might help here. The GAWR on the 9.75" axle is 4500 lbs and the 8.8" 3800 lbs. These weights are for the axles themselves, per the axle mfg's website: www.visteon.com. The truck's rear axle weight rating could be less.

The axle code may also help. You can look it up in the 'tech articles' section of this website under 'axle decoders'. Axle weights are listed with the ratio and diff type that the code referrs to.

From my experience. 4.6 engine = 8.8 axle. 5.4 = 9.75. But usually a visual is enough if you know what your looking at. Otherwise the tag is usually a safe way of finding out.
