i am the proud owner of a 1990 ford F-150 running a stock 300 i-6 but..... this is what drives me nuts. i have an odd sewing machine sound comming from the top end. no vac loss,no engine lobing/lagging, no oil pressure loss,. sound remains the same with or without the air filtration attached. had the heads scoped for wear no warpage. not octane ping either have used high grade fuel in a few tanks to check. any info on possability will be greatfuly welcome. sound is rpm dependant only makes it when engine is started and from idle to top rpm's:P
i even disconnected the serpentine belt and still had the same sound cold or hot same diffrence.. has a new oem waterpump alternator power steering pump and steering box. sounded the same before i replaced didnt change sound
If it's not affecting reliability / running qualities and it's not overly obtrusive....let it ride. Sounds like one of two things.
1.) you might have a valve train that is slightly looser than the average.
2.) you might have a couple of the "A.I.R. lines" at the exhaust manifold leaking slightly. These are darm near impossible to tighten without pulling the head.
Neither is a "DOWN CHECK" item. They are however now mostly annoying. But having a INLINE 6 that sounds like your Mom's Singer is kinda neat. My 87 sounded like yours does and never had a bit of trouble with it. You could hear the ticking outside of the hood, but just barely. However my 93 is quiet from 2 foot away.
When the ricers hear it and ask what you have underthe hood, tell them "6 KEEBLER elves working 6 double needled Singer's. You want a death shroud made for your ricer??? Take about 20 minutes!"

ya know i never actually thought about them darn compression lines.... would take too much useless effort to find out which one is doing it..... drivability is awesome can even roast the rubber in 2nd. and as for the keebler elves that is tooo funny and the reaction would be classic... thanks all for the feedback.... never thought of it but could say what engine thats my mom and her 5 friends making a couple bed spreads for the back
I would try adding a can of STP to the oil. If it is a slightly loose valvetrain, then maybe the added viscosity might make a change. Have you removed the valve cover and listened with a stethoscope? You might even see something with just a visual inspection. Good luck, John
You have an extremely quite engine you are hearing the injectors activate. I don't hear real good anymore but I can hear injectors firing not so much on v-8' but on 6's and 4's.
nope the sound is comming from the other side than the spark plugs i even used a pressure tester to make sure the compression is good in all 6. and the sound is far from quiet... think of an older model dish washer on rinse cycle... not the new "silent" washers... ohh heck kinda like one of them old washing machines that have the roller attached to it that you manualy fill/drain
