im trying to take out my 5.0 302 out of my 88 f150 5spd
its hangin up on something, its coming about .5 inches off the tranny so its not bolted to that any more
although its still not moving out completely
my book says
"if youre working on a vehicle with a manual tranny the INPUT SHAFT must be completely disengaged from the clutch. "
what the hell is the input shaft.. and how do i disengage it .. that has to be the hang up.. i just dont know how to disengage it though
any help is appreciate.
asap ..
thanks
im sure ill have more questions to come..
oh, my truck has a Y pipe for the exhaust, but i was told to get the Y pipe off the 5.8 im puttin in the truck so itll fit. But the 5.8 doesnt have a Y pipe the 2 down pipes went straight into the cat... do i have to remove my exhaust and hook up the down pipe to cats... or can i just keep my Y pipe on there and bolt it to the 5.8 ?
you may have to remove the transmission from the crossmember and slide it back, that way the input shaft will come all the way out of the clutch, the shaft runs from the transmission into the crankshaft, where it is in a pilot bearing/bushing. what wour probly hitting is the oil pan on the cross member, thats whats not letting you pull it out all the way.

k .. ill go try now.. see if its hangin up on the cross member, i didnt think you had to touch the tranny to get the 5.0 out.. but ill see
everyone keep giving me replies please, im trying to get this out tonight!!!
its not hitting the crossmember... ill try that trans thing... so i just disconnect it from the mounts.. and it should slide back? does it have enough play with the driveshaft and transfer case?
Moving the tranny back is a bit more involved, there is no play between it and the t-case. You shouldn't have to move the tranny at all, and it's a lot of work/steps on a 4x4. I have never pulled an engine, but I think you just need to move it (the engine) forward a bit to disengage the tranny's input shaft. You'll probably--guessing--need to move it forward 3 inches or so to clear, then you can pull the engine up. If you haven't pulled the radiator, you'll probably need to to get the clearance needed. Pull it forward a bit, check if clear, pull forward more, check again, etc.
Not sure about your exhaust question...maybe someone else will help you with that.
sound okay? i know ill have to do a bit of cutting.. but i should be able to make it work
if anyone wants to give some pointers, or a step by step on getting the motor back in.. i would appreciate it greatly ... i just dont want to mess up on one minor thing and screw myself over.
i have a haynes which has helped for the most part.. but they dont have the tricks of the trade
thanks guys
i honestly wouldnt have been able to do it without all your help
glad to hear you go tthe motor out, sorry to send you in the wrong direction, i was told when i do mine (87 f-150 4x4 351 auto,) that i may have to slide the tranny back get the TC out, i thought it may have been the same for the standard. and with your pipe, ifit soundls like youve got the idea,
