Hello all. I have a 92 with a 3.0L and its been running rough for about a week. I had to replace the alternator a few days ago and havent had time to do much else. Today I figured I would go to auto zone and have them pull the codes for me. Well...... I called first to see if they could do it for my 92 and they said yes. When I got there they stated that the reader didnt work and that I should have called first. (gotta just laugh or I might cry) Then I went to the auto zone down the road and they couldnt find theirs. After pushing them a little, they miraculously found it. They pulled a bunch of codes and all were two digit. I suspect something was read wrong... am I right? He told me that they were 11,12,15,54,72. I have cleaned the MAP sensor, replaced the fuel filter, and I'm getting ready to replace the fuel regulator and the clock spring. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Should I try resetting the computer since I replaced the alternator? I love my aerostar, but this is making whats left of my hair fall out...lol. Oh yea, I also smelled the infamous "egg" smell today. Would a bad cat throw codes too? and make the engine rough like that?
ok... I just spent the last 30 min. looking for vacuum leaks and found a wire at the front of the engine, right to the right of the new alternator. It is a small wire with an end that looks like a spark plug boot. At first I thought I left a wire off the alternator, but found nothing. The wire connects to a larger harness that runs to the passenger side of the motor. I could have knocked it off when i was replacing the alternator... it was dark and i was plenty ticked off at the time...lol
Idle air control valve. ON a 3.0 it is on the top left front of the intake manifold. At idle it works as a controlled vacuum leak to allow air in when the throttle blade is closed. They go bad sometimes and cause a rough idle.

Reason: misspelling
How long since it had new plugs?
Can you take a look at it running in the dark? When I did this I found my coil, plug wires wires & cap leaking spark.
It was running like you describe. I replaced all those parts and the plugs and now it runs like new . I also replaced the fuel filter and did an oil change at the same time.
