front brake install

1999 4x2 ext cab 3.0 litre
Can anyone tell me why one brake pad (inboard I think) comes with a sort of wire clip on it and the other one doesn't? What is the purpose of it? Does it fit with something important when you install the pads?

I think it might be an anti-squeal and/or an anti-rattle thing.

That would be what is called a squealer, lets you know when the pads are getting thin.

I thought he was referring to the clips on some pads that pivot back and forth which press against the anti-rattle clips on the calipers....

Maybe I'm thinking of my Taurus.

Rockledge, were getting close. These are on the back of the metal "shoe" and can't contact the disc in any way. The could touch the plunger though.

The clip most likley fits inside the piston, (inboard side). This keeps the pad from rattling and or falling out during service.

it fits in the piston to hold it in place. makes it have to go on the caliper first instead on laying against the rotor while putting the caliper back on. Wish dodge would think of that.

I just replaced the pads on a '99 Ranger today and the only little "clip" type device that is made onto the inside pad is the "squealer" it will only make contact with the rotor when the pads wear down. There is no clip that holds the pad to the piston, the pads are held into the caliper bracket with "clips" and the caliper slides over the pads and is bolted to the bracket.

What kind of pads were they?

I'm pretty sure my Napa Ceramix had more than that on them.

It does not matter what brand of pads I used because replacement pads are made just like the original pads. The pads also had shims on the back but that was all. The way the caliper and mounting bracket are designed there is no need for clips to be made onto the the pad that snap into the caliper piston and the calipers are a duel piston type. The outside and inside pad are the same except for the "squealer".

OK chief, you're probably right, and since you just had your eyeballs right in there, we should take your word for it. It's been several months since I did my Ranger's front brakes, and since that time, I've also done the front and rears on my SHO (4W discs) and also the front of my Taurus GL. So I'm not sure which is what regarding pads anymore.
