2.9L head - will itwork?
I have a 2.9L in a 1989 Ranger with 160K miles on it. It was previously rebuilt at 85K where it got two new heads. It quit running two months ago and I found that both head gaskets were blown. The heads looked ok when I pulled them off. I took them to a machine shop and a crack was found in one of them. I went to a salvage yard and got another 2.9 head. I compared it to my original head when I got it home and found it to be somewhat different. The casting number on the original one is C851A the new one has 4H98 on the exhaust flange and JNL next to it. It also has 9811 and 905 punched into the top of the head on either side of the center set of valves. Will the new head I have work?

you have a 89 head and a 87 head with those numbers
the 89head is better, 87,88,heads are known for cracking
89heads are better,
your heads with those numbers are as follows one is 89 and the other is 87
if will work but you'll soon be doing the job again.

Thanks for the reply Monty06. That '89 head really does look a whole lot stronger than the '88. Unfortunately I have about $120 in the '88 head right now (magnaflux, milling, and removing the broken exhaust studs) so I'd really like to use it. If I could get another 50K or so out of it I'd be a happy man. They've still got the other '89 head for $85 at the salvage yard so I've got some thinking to do. Thanks again.
