I always shift into reverse first (don't let go of the clutch) and then into 1st gear. Just something my dad told me to do when I was learning, and it seems to help when 1st gear is kinda tough to engage.
You might try shifting into 2nd when you stop and then into 1st gear. This trick was posted on the forums a while back and works great. Most all of the F150 manuals are notchy.

That is, unfortunately, "normal" for the M5OD Mazda 5-speed. Slipping into 2nd and then into 1st will save you a lot fo grief.
Let me invite you to stop in the 4.2 forum. Most of the guys in there are pretty broad with their discussions and most anything and everything comes up from time-to-time. Seems the 4.2 V6 is the common bond and that makes every other subject fair game!
