Can I replace a CA/NY emissions ecm with a commonly found one?
My problem is I need a new ecm for my truck but since it was bought in california it has the rare AEA CA/NY only version. The part stores around here cant even get one (R&R Only) nor do any salvage yards have them. I am wondering if I could just use an ecm from a standard 94 f150 2wd 4.9 E4OD? Im assuming the only differance would be emissions, Im not really concerned about having california emissions since Im in indiana. I just need my truck back on the road.
You should be able to do that with no problems. The pinouts should all be the same, so as long as it is supposed to control the same year truck with the same engine/transmission, you are good to go.
A1 Cardone should have one, at Vip Autoparts. Go with the oem number off the eec. I could not find one by applacation for mine, only by Ford OEM part number. Also Standard Motor's my have a core to. Just so you know they rearly go bad. You can have it tested first for about $30.00. Can you get trouble codes?
The parts store called A1 Cardone and they said that it was R&R only. Im fairly certain it is defective because I am not getting the proper voltages or resistance out of it. I can get a computer out of a 4.9 w/e4od van for 35 bucks. I think I may try that before I pay 170 to send it in to have it rebuilt. If it runs I'll be happy. The ignition it totally dead right now.
For a used one see www.car-parts.com it list all the eec oem numbers for your truck year, see if yours is on the list. Also call ford parts and see if your oem number on the eec was updated to a newer number. Standard Motors is 1-800-227-7441 ask if they have a core, you will need the oem number.
