Okay, today I drove my X to work and had no problems with it. I went out to go to lunch, jumped in, started her up, put it in gear and nothing. It wouldn't move. I tried all gears and nothing. But, as I put it back into park, it made a grinding noise. I immediatly shut her down, smoked a ciggarette and thought of all the $$ I would have to spend to get it fixed. So, as one last hope, I started it back up, put it in gear, and it was like nothing ever happened. I drove it to lunch and back with no problems at all. I have a 2002 limited with a V10 with about 78,000 miles.
Does this problem sound familliar to anyone? This is the first time this has happened (and hopefully the last). Thanks for any input.
Is it a 4x4? It sounds like a transfer case going to neutral. The clue is the grinding when you put it back into park. That was the park pall grinding on the park gear.
since you mentioned the tranfer case, I tried putting it in 4WD, and it doesn't seem to be kicking into 4WD when I turn the switch......I'm so confused.....what would cause this to happen? What will it take to fix it?
Okay - I want to investigate the tranfercase idea....where do I need to start?
I have also had problems in the past where right after start up, either backing out of the driveway or turning out of a parking space, it feels like 4X4 is engaged kind of "hopping" through the turn and shortly after that, it goes away. Sort of seems like it slips into 4X4 while parked, and with the incident the other day with it seeming to slip into nuetral, I am gonna take my best guess that it has something to do with the transfer case.
Problem is, I have no knowledge of transfer cases. Any ideas as to where to start investigating would be greatly appreciated. I do know how to check the fluid in it, but that's about it.
