I want to use something underneath of my 82 F100 where I just did all my welding to fix the floor and bottom of the cab corners. I've seen 3m has a brushless seam sealer, but its a bit pricey for me at $25 buck for a quart. Would silicone work well to put over the areas that I welded that might still have some small pin holes in them. I've seen in areas under the cab where ford used a type of seam sealer. I just want to protect the areas before I paint them with zero rust. Thanks Fred

The first time you paint a rig that has silicone on it, you'll learn to hate it. I don't use anything that has silicone in it.
Auto seam sealer is the way to go. It's made for what you want to do. I suppose you might be able to find a paintable sealer in a hardware store. No way of telling if it will hold up though.
Another option is to use a fiberglassed based filler. Something like Kittyhair or Duraglass.
I found the local auto parts store (Auto Zone) to have seam sealer in a caulking gun/style tube. I went through several tubes while replacing the sealer on my former '66 Econoline.
