Zero Rust Users.....assistance Please
i sandblasted the frame, wiped it down with acetone, used a product called picklex to prep the steel then applied a single coat of zero rust. due to my schedule, about a week later i used a scotch brite pad to scuff the frame and applied 2 more coats of zero rust using grey and black for the different coats. i waited about 30 minutes between coats as the directions state.
the next day, i look over the frame and everything looks dry and well. except i see a few thin spots on the paint (i dont paint for a living). so i decide to scotch brite the frame again and hit it with two more lite coats. after i put the first coat on i see some slight veining in some locations on the frame. not spliting of the paint, more like "finger prints" if you understand. i thought i may have put the coat on a little thick. so i let it set for an hour then hit it once more with the black zero rust.
now 2 days later it still has some slight veinging in spots...not spliting, just the "finger printing" and some spots seems to be "soft" to the touch. i dont care about the veining becasue the paint has not seperated and i was planing on putting a clear coat over the entire frame once everything is bolted back together (brackets, etc)
i call zero rust and they tell me i should have only used 2 coats. if i was to put additional coats on then it should have happened 5-7 days after the first two coats.
the instructions say a MINIMUM of two coats and makes no reference to waiting 5-7 days to apply additional coats.
so, is this crap going to lift off the frame in a few months? or is it going to take a few weeks for it to fully cure then it will be fine?
im going to be one ****ed off dude if i have to blast all this crap off and do it again.
considering a few people on here recommended this product i would hope someone has applied it similar to how i have...maybe even experienced the same?
thanks for the help.
Zero Rust has a longggggggggg drying period.
I suspect your frame will turn out just fine. Why? Because I have done the same as you and in the end, everything worked out.
It's interesting you were told to appy only two coats. That shows you how good the product is. Two coats will do it and there are no problems with two coats, using the proper application procedure. Why would anyone want to apply more, the factory techs are probably thinking?
On my current frame, I applied 3 coats. In some areas there will be at least 5 coats, after I finish with my fabrication.
By the way, did I mention ZR has a longggggg drying period. I like to wait 2-3 weeks (in good warm weather) before I apply additional ZR.
i dont want to bolt this thing together and have paint flake off in 3 months.....i spent a lot of time pulling the frame down and sandblasting....
thanks for the responses.
Yes I have. I doubt it'll be an issue.
If you have concerns, give it a little more drying time and then rough it up with some sandpaper. I think you'll find the paint is firmly attached.
