Question Locker ?s

Got a question on Lockers here ya'll. What I'm looking for is a manual 100% lockup deal. What I mean is, I want to be able to switch on & off completely, when it's on both wheels spin no matter what(except broken things), when it's off I want it to act like an open differential. Gotta be strong too, high hp/tq engine(603/657) up front and 38" tires all the way around.... So what's the best?? Don't care about the function that makes it lock(ie air, electric) It's just gotta be strong and durable! Thanks!

either ARB air locker or TracTechs Electracs! both very reputable and they fit your description perfectly

The Eaton ELocker and ARB are full spools when locked and open when off. The Electrac and Ected are ls when off. The T-turd in Heeps is similar to the ARB.

I've heard that ARB seems to have problems with their air seals...Is this true?

Yes, its true. If I were to pick between the two I'd probably go with the elocker.

It really kills me that there's no e-locker for the D70. I'll be going ARB's but I'm a little unsure about the whole air system. All I can say for sure is a LOT of people have used ARB's for some hardcore stuff and they still have a really good reputation. I figure they must work more often than not.

I've never heard they werent strong, just the seals go bad easily and the air locker becomes basically an expensive open carrier...and They don't even make an eLocker for the 9 inch or D60?

Well, I wouldn't say its as bad as all that. As Ivan pointed out, they are used succesfully for hard use by thousands of extreme wheelers. But they certainly have more points of failure than the elocker. It kills me that they don't make one for the 70 either. I'll think we'll be seeing more options in the next year though.

A lot of the ARBs have been redesigned with newer seals that don't blow out as easy.

They do make an eaton ELocker for the D60. I don't think they have one for the 9" though. The case and gears on the ELockers are damned solid, but I'm sure Pro can break one as he can break an iron anvil if chevit pulls up beside him!

They also make the Detroit Electrac for the D60, both 30 and 35 spline. That was my original plan before this forum corrupted me and stuck a D70 under my truck.

Don't know about the Eatons but the Electrac runs right about $800 for both the D44 and D60. Another $200 if you want them chromed.
