I recently purchased a 99 Ranger 3.0, 2 - wheel drive, automatic overdrive. It had 24K when i bought it. Now I have about 30K on it. I've been checking the fuel consumption and everytime I'm getting 12 - 13 MPG. I've checked the fuel pressure and it's at spec's. What can I check now? Any ideas would be appriciated. I know it should get about 19 or better, I mostly drive highway and some city. Thanks Don
My new 2002 Ranger Egde with a 3.0L auto only gets 14-16 mpg. which sucks because my Fairlane with the 390 get 12 mpg with a 650 holly DP with mech sec.
If it does NOT have EDIS, then you can check the base ignition timing. That could cause poorer mileage. The O2's could be 'lazy', but they really 'trim' the injection time to a nonce. How much stuff do you carry in the truck all the time, and how fast do you drive? Does the engine come up to temp quickly? -- thermostat Does it have any codes, such as for ECT or ACT?-coolant and incoming air temp. All the above will tell the ECM to add a smidge more gas.. cold air outside, cold engine. ONe last thing is to watch the fuel pressure regulator. THey can spike the pressure intermittently... spike the spritzes tooo...
Did you check your odometer against 'known' mileage markers?
tom
Well the truck runs fine, not a glich anywhere I comute daily 15 miles one way to work. Empty no load in box, I drive a county road which is policed at 55 MPH. I usually stay under 60mph, theres no codes, temp comes up fast, I just runs great but the miliage sucks? I'm thinking the guy that traded it in couldn't afford to feed it, and thats why he traded it in.
The truck I traded in on the Ranger was a Full size F150 2 wheel drive standard overdrive 4.9 Six cyl's, and I got 18 -19 on that???
I suppose the dealer will just give me a runaround, even if it's still under factory warranty. But like you say the sensor's could be giving me bad miliage. The tailpipe stays nice and grey so I don't think it running rich, and it never smelt rich even in the morning. thanks Don
