I have a 2002 Ford XLT short bed and am thinking about building a slatted wooden floor for my bed. I was thinkng of using 1 x 4's, sandng them smooth, staining them and then putting a couple of coats of poly on them. When hauling stuff I will use indoor outdoor carpet cut to fit and lay on top of the wood. Anyone ever build a wood floor. Tips???????????
on my cousins ranger we built a whole entire bed made out of 2x4's cause he got hit in the rear so the bed got all messed up. oddly enough it ended up looking good. that was about 3-4 years ago and that bed is still standin strong.
Think I will stick to 1 x 4's
2 x 4's might add too much weight
I don't do hauling much, mainly doing it for looks
Will stain and poly it. Have to decide what kind of metal strips to use between slats though. I look in all the truck mags to see some and get some ideas but haven't found any photos yet. If you know where some are please let me know. Thanks

I would say you're looking for looks alone. I would go with something harder than pine. I understand you intend to cover it when actually using the bed, but as the saying goes ***** Happens! I'd go with oak. It's alot prettier when finishes and is very durable.
Look throught the 47 & Older and the '48 - '60 boards. I've seen alot of discussions on this topic in these boards since alot of these trucks came with the wood floors originally. They'll tell you the best woods to use and alot of the how-to's.
