The fuel gage in the tank is defected or has a broken wire on the sending unit. It will have to be replaced are repaired (tank will have to be drained and the unit removed)
Yep...make sure its pretty close to empty and you disconnect the fuel lines and fuel filler tube, they can be almost as hard to remove and put back in as the tank is heavy to lift up with the two straps, get a good jack and blocks to help lift it up if its too heavy for you. A helper that doesn't smoke is the next thing to worry about....
yea they are harder to get back in than to get out
my dad and i had to change the fuel pump on my mom's 98' suburban in tank 42gal just gassed up on the side of the road had a good floor jack and a set of wrenches i'll be sure to drain this one
not to worries about not being able to wrassle it back in place i'm a pretty good sized 16 year old 6'3 260
thanks for the advise
The sending unit is usually on top an can be hard to remove, the unit has rubber type seal/gasket (some are not make out of rubber but looks like it) The ring notches it on and it will be removed in a clockwise rotational angle. it will lift out after the ring has been taken off, be careful lifting it out as you don't want to drop any of the old material that will come off the old sending unit back into the tank, lower the unit in and before you do, apply some clean lube on the gasket to help it seal when you put the ring back on. Also look inside the tank to make sure there isn't any dirt...rust...and water still in the bottom...makes things work nicer when you KNOW you done it right.
If your not up to replacing the sender, you might try what I tried. Remove the sender, remove black plastic cover very carefully. You should see a small metal finger that wipes across a circuit board as the float moves. It should be apparent the finger has worn an arc across the circuit board. Carefully move the tip of the finger to a new position on the board, just under the worn arc. Keep in mind the finger has to mantain contact with the board throught it's entire sweep. Hook up an ohm meter and move the float arm slowly in both directions. Make sure the readings are smooth and consistent.
I didn't replace a sending unit this way but I think it would be alot easier to do this way. When I repainted my 84 several years ago I had to take the bed off, taking the bed off was very easy; unhook filler neck right behind the bed, unhook wiring to taliights, and take out 6 or 8 bolts. With the bed off I believe the sending unit is right htere in wide open space with lots of room to work. Two guys can move the bed back far enough to get your work done and then put the bed back in place. If youdon't have alot of room to work under a truck this may be easier. To me I would rather work down on something than work overhead laying underneath.
