I have a 2000 F250 V10 with a bad ticking noise. I am pretty sure that I have piston slap but I was also wondering if the injectors could be make noise to. After the truck warms up the piston slap stops but with I step on the gas the ticking starts and then usually stops a few seconds later, then starts again and stops. It does this off and on for about 10 minutes after I start driving the truck. If this sounds like injectors would some injector cleaner help or is it time to replace the bad ones. Thank in advance for any comments.
How many miles. I believe your suppose to use 5W-20. But i have no problem with mine running 10W-30 with 90,000 miles. Have you ever tried Castrol Syntec 10W-30. Seems to be a good oil well for my V10. Don't know about others as I do live here in Los Angeles, CA.
I have a '92 F150 with a 351 that had a very similar ticking noise to what you describe. I went through checking a lot of the same things you are (injectors, emmisions solenoids, sticky valves, loose rocker arms) as it really sounded like it was coming from the engine. It drove me crazy for quite a while. It turned out to be in a catalytic converter.
How about the oilfilter as a possible cause?
This is from a review of a Fram oil filter:
"The rubber anti-drainback valve seals the rough metal backplate to the cardboard end cap and easily leaks, causing dirty oil to drain back into the pan. If you have a noisy valve train at startup, this filter is likely the cause."
