Collector Gaskets

I've ordered the Victor Nitroseal gaskets and so far have the header gaskets. I had to reorder the collector gaskets but I'm wondering if they are even necessary.

Those are usually the ones that blow out the most.

Ya, they seem to get more abuse then manifold side.

If you dont have any in there, I guarantee LEAKS! That is unless exhaust is loud enough to cover them up...

I just cut off the collectors alltogether, bumped up the pipe to fit snug, and welded it up.... no leaks that way!!!

I welded my '67 and '69 solid. They got in the way of the crossmember/clutch linkage anyway. I slipped on a reducer and slipped on exhaust pipe.

One less area to leak.

I'd love to weld mine but I think it would hurt more than help. Just curious, what would red RTV do at the collector?

Burn out in two minutes..... If you want to use a goop, go to napa, and get a tube of accousti-seal, its in a white tube, and is a black tarry kinda stuff... we use it for exhaust stuff at work... just dont get any on yer fingers!

I'll wait on the gaskets from Napa. They're Nitroseals so maybe they'll last a little while. I'll use the "nuclear tested" accousti-seal as a last resort.

Not to steal the thread but it's on the same topic... I went to Napa yesterday to look for that sealant crazyairman was talking about and it could not be found, also the guy thought I was crazy because he didn't know what I was talking about.

I keep blowing through the POS mr. gasket paper ones at $5/set. Both sides were very badly gone. So, I bought some of those aluminum collector gaskets ($15/set) and one side worked and one side did not. Both of my collector flanges (on the header side) are bent because they are skinny, but the flanges on the exhaust pipe are thick and not bent.

With the aluminum ones, the passenger side leaks bad, (I can feel it). What else could I do to seal up the air gap. What about header wrap? Or heat tape or goop, or ARGH!!!

Ya know. My FPA Headers came with ball-socket collectors have never leaked and don't need any gaskets :-)

Sorry, just had to jab back at all those that rib me for paying for these headers :- )

Seriously, these type of collectors might be something to consider.

Hey Ceetwarrier....
I will get the Napa number off of a tube that I have on my box at work, and post it here tomorrow. Its funny the counter guy didnt know what you were talking about, since its a Napa branded product!

The ball fit that gtex speaks of is the absolutely BEST way to go, I dont see why more manufacturers dont go that way ( crappy 3 bolt flange cheaper to produce I guess...?) Its mostly only on higher end stuff, FPA, Stans( which I prefer to FPA... ONLY MY OPINION THO) Gibsons, etc.

I've got a set of new Hedmans right here that I think are the ball type you guys speak of. Am I correct?

Airman, is this glue perminent or could it come off if I need it to?
