i have a 2003 crewcab 4x4 6.0 with 20000 miles on it, i figured i would change the air filter. Well that was a bad decision.First of all it was $80.00 and its a pain in the #ss to install.Harder than my old 97.i think ill let the dealer reinstall it.It seems to fit but it just doesnt look right. any thoughts or tricks on an easy filter install?
Easier yet is to take off the intake from the air filter to the turbo as one piece and then replace the filter. Even then it is a pain it the butt. You have to take off the overflow hose at the coolant degas bottle. The back seal on that might not have a nice uniform alignment but as long as it is not off more than 5/8 in., it's ok.
You shouldn't have to replace that filter at less than 30,000 miles. It is a heavy duty air filter designed by Donaldson for the military vehicles in the first Gulf War. Under normal service, they should go 50-60K miles.
I got mine for $53.53 list at $89.00 at a local parts house. Shop around.
