Hesitation and check engine light

I have a 1997 Ranger that has been a great little truck. It works so hard for me I feel bad when I go one mile over when getting the oil changed. I do most of my work myself, but when it comes to these new fangled trucks, I find myself scratching my head when it comes to some things

I'm getting a fuel smell while driving and also today I noticed hesitation while taking off from a light. the check engine light came on after it did this reporting the a problem with the EGR valve. Would that cause problems like this? or is the analyser lieing to me? other than that I have replaced the plugs wires, air filter. I did all that before this problem cam up. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

An EGR problem might cause a hestitation problem, did you get the code number. For the gas smell, is it a rich condition or raw gas, a rich condition could be an O2 problem which could cause hesitation also.

Yeah the code was p401 EGR flow insufficient... If egr valve is the problem, what's involved in replacing it?

Thanks

A P0401 tells you that the EGR flow is low. THis does not mean that the EGR is bad. Proper diagnosis is to run the vehicle with a vacum guage hooked to the EGR vacum line. Put it throuh the KOER test and look at the guage to see if it gets vacum of at least 3 inches. If it does than check the voltage at the sensor that has the lines running from the EGR tube to it. It should be below a volt with the key on engine off. Apply vacum, to the smaller of the two lines. It should rise. I have replaced a lot of these sensors for a P0401 code. For some reason the new sensor looks different than the old one, problem with the old style maybe.

Hi,

I have a 2000 Ranger 3.0L and I am getting the same code.

First off, is there any damage to the truck running it this way, or can I drive it awhile until I have time to fix it?

I have yet to do any of the diagnostics you referenced above, but is it typically the sensor that is bad, or I have read about some people having to clean the ports (don't know what they mean by ports, but that is what I have read)?

I would appreciate any information I can get... I just might need a little more hand holding than most :-)

Hesitation and check engine light

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-Aug-02 AT 05:23 AM (EST)]Howdy, recently i had to remove my upper intake manifold and throttle body, and when i did the EGR gasket was bent in half. It was folded over itself restricting much flow. If the vaccum test doesnt work, try cleaning it out. It can really get built up with junk and clogged. My check engine light didn't come on tho. If there is restrictive flow, it can cause the engine to heat up hotter than what it should be which could cause knocking or overheating.

Hope that helps
