ball joints!!!???
I have a 98 Ranger 2wd. I need to replace the lower ball joints. I got a loaner press from Autozone but I can't get it to fit behind the spindle. Does everything have to come off to access the ball joints?

Prepare for the worst with the ball joints
Saw your thread and thought I'd pass what info I have along to you. I just paid 330 to have my passenger side lower and upper joints replaced. I was "pressed" for time and had to have the shop do it for me. They said it was cheaper to have them both done at once (though I only needed the lower ones done) because they have to take everything in the front end apart to get to the lower ball. Having seen their installation and meditated on the lengths to which they must have gone to get the new joints in, it was almost worth the money and time saved.

When I did mine, I found it easier to pull everything off and work on the bench. It isn't too difficult and is much easier to work on the joints. I would also recommend replacing the uppers as well while it is apart. More than likely they will not be far behind in failing if the lowers are shot. Good luck.
