Starting problem with my BII

1989 BII 2.9L Eddy Bower 4x4 runs good normally.
  • Voted last night it ran fine the 45minute trip there.
  • Started up then died when I tried to start again the system seemed dead as a door nail lights went dim.
  • Silenoid clicked once but not after trying the first time. If I let it sit the syneoid wil click again. No power then it comes back without reason I can tel and the same thing happens.
  • Battery reads 13V with a metter
  • When I jump it the lights brighten up as if my batery were dead but it does the same thing when I try to start it.
  • My first impresion was bad battery but after checking the voltage with a metter I looked at the ignition switch.
  • Here's where I feel dumb. I cant find the ignition switch Napa sold me one. But I cant find where the thing goes. My gut tells me near the key but dambed if I can find a switch like the one they sold me.
  • I took the NAPA swich to Auto Zone to see if they came up with a diferent switch but it's the same.
  • My manual shows me nothing.
  • can't find an exploded view on the web or in a book
History:
  • Recentlly I replaced a very warn out alternator but not the battery.
  • The key has often gotten stuck short of the start position. This leaves the ABS light on on the dash and won't let the fan or radio operate.
  • I have a chewed up ring gear that sounds bad but has never caused a problem starting. It has all it's teeth.
  • The starter teeth are fine.
  • I've tried jumping the starter relay with a screw driver to bump the starter. but get nothing but sparks.
  • I tapped the starter and even loosened it in case the gear was stuck on the fly wheel.
So there's my problem. I need this vehicle for another week maybe 2 as I am buying a Ranger. Till then it's my transport and I'm gettin despirate

Welcome to FTE!!!

I'm leaning towards a bad connection or internally corroded battery cable(s).

When you get your Ranger stop by our Ranger forum and say hi.

Sounds an awful lot like bad connection from cables to battery. Like Ken said corroded battery cables, I'm on my way out tonight here in about 15 min to change out my cables. Also take off the positive connection, use a steel brush and get any build-up off and attack the battery too, then put the cable back on and tighten it semi-tight but dont make it crack the lead part off.

Thanks for your help Ken00 and RomerB2. You were dead on. When I replaced my alternator I also replaced the cable ends. The negative clamp came loose and lost ground. O narrowed it down with my battery powered ready light It clamps to the battery for power I just worked from the post out and it din't take very long to figure it out.

Thanks again
