Hello all
I was driving back from Northern CA to Southern CA (approx 600 miles) was averaging around 80 MPH on flat freeway (interstate 5) when I started up the Grapevine (long incline) when I started to smell something smoking. I immediatly pulled over and found transmission fluid dripping off the block thus creating the smoke and smell. I had the truck towed to a local gargage in Frazier Park thinking I blew a seal, however, the seals where fine. The mechanic stated I had overheated the transmission and the fluid was coming from the over flow. I was not towing anything. I have a 5.8 w/E4OD transmission. I had just replaced the tranny fluid before I left on the trip. I replaced 1 qt of tranny fluid, let the tranny cool off and completed my trip home without incident. The truck is running fine now but I have not taken it on anyother long trips. Sorry about the long post but I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this problem, and if so, how can I prevent it from happening in the future? I do not tow anything with my Bronco, so I didn't think I needed a tranny cooler. Thank you in advace for any help.
Yeah the grapevine is a killer...several trips out to AZ over the Cajone hosed my AOD. I've got a larger cooler and a temp guage on my tranny now. I would suggest both for insurance. And I haven't had any problems yet. You can check out my cooler upgrade in my gallery.

Absolutely, cooler & temp. gauge. Also, does your converter unlock on the uphill, or just shift out of od? I found on mine the temp climbs when unlocked on sustained climbs. At least with the gauge you can monitor & the cooler really helps.
some of us with Linc. Mark viii have to upgrade the tranny cooler in our cars since we race them. A few of us have installed the biggest TC we can find and then mount fans on it. you know for the added protection.
How do you install a tranny temp guage? What is the normal temp. for an automatic?
The Autometer gauge I got had the 1/8" pipe sender with it. I installed in the pan close to the filter pickup. Also came with mount for gauge, it's electric so was easy to hookup. Outside temp has to get to 100 deg. or more before mine goes to 180. Normally runs about 150-160, that's with the extra cooler I added.
Hey Erik
From the pics I'm assuming you have to remove the grill
to install the cooler, correct? Any other hints for installation would be appreciated.
thanks
Just FYI, I had heard about the E40D overheat prblem from other owners before I bought my bronce and install and additional trans cooler along side the first and a temp guage and have never overheated it regardless of how much much or crud was stuck to it. But when it did breakdown I think that was due to the previous owners abuse and just cuaght up with me. Although a buddy who did the same setup, and has owned his bronco since day one hasn't evr had an problems with heat, and when he takes it in to get serviced the mechanics always mention how clean the fluid looks. Just thought you might like to know.

Yes you remove the black plastic strip on top of the grill and then the grill itself. Pretty easy to do. Also...if you pick up a cooler from a junk yard, make sure you get the clip/bolt for the top...makes installation a lot easier and more secure. If you get one froma yard you also might want to flush it to check for leaks and build up that could get transfered to your tranny. You can also get aftermarket ones as stated above, but I did this due to it's plug and play simplicity. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
Had a Jasper rebuilt transmission (E40D) installed in my 91 Bronco. They warrant it for 3 years or 75,000 miles but you must install their transmission cooler. They claim the Ford cooler isn't sufficient.
