Does anyone have any data on using different grades of fuel?
I have a Expedition 4X4 5.4L. Its stock with only one engine mod at that would be the K&N FIPK setup. Is there any benifit from running a higher oct gas? My choices in the area are 87 which is what I run, 89, or 91. I'm looking for mpg not really power (but I will take both). I'm just looking for anyone that might have ran a test on this.
Higher octane fuel is formulated to withstand a greater compression ratio before pinging or preignition occurs. The only way you can get better mileage or more power using premium gas is if your engine is modified in some way to up the compression ratio or advance the timing to get the extra power out of the fuel. Stick with regular gas.
Looks like mine might be the exception, but I've tried several times and find that I get about 1-1.5 more MPG on the highway with 89 over 87. I've not noticed as much difference around town, but it's very noticeable on trips. This is in a stock 2000 XLT 4x4, just over 80K miles. 87 octane on highway runs about 15-15.5, 89 gets 16.5-17. I've tried 91 also, doesn't seem to make any difference over 89.
I don't dispute your findings just relaying what I've read on the subject. Does your manual suggest the higher octane? What I've read says thats the only reason to use it . Also have you actually figured your savings in milage compared to the higher cost of the higher octane? Just courious. Mike
