Does size really matter? (tires)

I have a 87 F150 4x4 with the factory lift. My dad had put on a set of 31x10.50x15 prior to me having it & they rub the frame when wheels are turned to max in either direction. The truck originally came with 235x70x15. I was contemplating replacing with the next size down, 30x950x15 to try to remedy this rubbing. Could I have other issues causing this rubbing. As far as I know, this truck is all original & has 168k miles.
Thanks for the replies.
Rick

Do you know your wheel's backspacing? Incorrect backspacing can cause different problems from premature bearing wear to tire rubbing.

31's on a stock wheel shouldn't rub,If the truck has too much toe-in or out it can cause rub though.By the way from faoctory tires should have been 235/"75" 15.

Correct on the 75 instead of the 70.
A little more info, it has the original wheels & the FE is aligned, according to my local tire shop. I'm not sure what wheel backspacing is, but should be correct since this vehicle is all factory original except tire size.
Thanks for your responses
