Wheels&Tires

Im eyeballing a used set of wheels and tires for my 66 longbed that currently has a stock suspension setup..

The only information I have right now is 15x10 and 15x8.

Can you give me some general guidelines on the backspacing and tire size these rims need to work on my 66?

My concerns are that the 15x10s will rub the leafs, but I do have the wider rear off my 75 parts truck I could use if needed and the 15x8s are to wide for the front. I dont want the fronts hanging out the wheel wells.

The 15 x 10 will fit on rear no problem! With correct back spacing a 285/40-18 will fit with a inch on each side. I have a custom made 10" wheel on my '66 F100 and plenty of room.

On the front if you have disc brakes a 15 x 8 is too wide. I am going to have my wheels narrowed to a 7" for front and change the back space by 1/4" and then think I will be fine.

If I went with the 18 x 8" on front it would give me clearance on the spindle then would be no problem.

Thanks Boss, I spoke with the seller today, he says he bought them new for a 78 project that never got on the road. So they are new, but 4 years old.

Tires are Goodyear Eagle GT 235/70/15 on 15x8 and 275/60/15 on 15x10

He is aking $700, will meet me half way, and test fit them. I dont think I can get the tires for $700.

If you have any wheels right now, you can use that to figure out the dimensions you need to get a 10" rim to work.

I have 15 x 8 with 3.5" backspace on the rear with the same size tire, 275/60-15. It fits with plenty of room. If my brain's working right, I think that you will need around 4.5" of backspace with a 10" rim. If the guy is willing to let you try it before buying, see what happens.

I would say by looking at those wheels they will not fit. They will be sticking out too far. Pretty sure mine are a 4 1/2" backspace but would have to double check. If I remember correct the 4 1/2 clears with a smaller tire but would need to bring in away from fender lip a bit more. Truck is kind of buried at the moment but will see if I can get to it to check. For sure a 8" wheel on front will not fit, does not matter what backspacing is if too much will hit the spindle (at least with disc brakes) Remember also 4 yr old tires even if new are 50% or less of original value

Those are not really what I want, but if they fit and the price was right I was going to buy them.

On a 15x8 rim whats the better backspace for the rear 2.5in or 4in?

It seems the 2.5in backspace would help fill out the wheelwell better.

Boss, do you mean to say {8" on front will stick out to far OR (depending on backspacing) wheel will hit CALIPER}??

I'm trying to make your statement clearer... I've used 8.5" wheels on the front of mine with about 3.75" backspacing. But yes they stick out from under the fender...

3.5 or 3.75 with an 8" rim anything else will put it too close for comfort if it fit at all.

Im looking at a set of chrome smoothies in an 8in or 10in width with a 4.25 back space.

Is that going to fit the rear without hitting the spring?

The best thing you can do is get under your truck and take some measurements. I don't think 8" with 4.25" backspace will work. 10" with 4.25" might.

You also have to take the cross section of the tire into account. The tire will bulge out farther on a narrow rim than it will on a wide rim so that even though the inside of the wheel is in the same relative position, the tire is not. To be clear, we'll say that "inside" is toward the center of the truck. That's why a different backspacing is required for different width rims to fit the same tire and why I don't think 4.25" will work with 8" but may work with 10"

8" will not fit on front as will stick out no matter what you do as no room to clear the spindle at tie rod unless one goes to a 18".

The tires will stick out past fender . . . Look at pics of mine as wheel is in as far as it can go (8") yet sticking out with a 245/60x15

Did later F100/F150s have wider steel wheels?

I know Jeep CJs and some D100s did.
