I bought a napa #6637 air filter today and want to install it. I removed the lid on the stock filter housing and noticed a small sensor thingy in the housing on the firewall side. The whole housing needs to be removed right? So do I just disconnect the sensor? BTW I did search the archives before asking. Thanks.
You want to leave the sensor plugged in. The ECU uses data from that sensor to help in the engine management. One dramatic thing that I notice is on a cold morning and the engine is warming up, if I touch the little tiny bulb that makes the sensor with my finger the fast idle immediatly slows down. Upon removing my touch from the sensor the engine immediatly resumes it's 1100 rpm fast idle until the engine reaches operationg tempurature. What I did was to remove the sensor from the lower half of the box where it was mounted and move it to a safe place and zip tie it to one of the brake lines where it resides right now.
Thanks guys. I'll get it down and install it today. Thanks for the air filter mod. No way I was spending $250 for a pipe and filter! I am working on moving the battery and building a cold air box from 1/2" plexiglass. Any input is welcome.
The sensor plugged into your airbox is the Barometric air sensor. Help with air metering and is needed to keep your air/fuel ratio in check. I bought an AFE Magnum air induction kit with the pre-filter boot off ebay for about $150 brand new. Heck of a good deal and it slid right in and worked very well.
I am pleased with the 6637 mod. Much improved oval performance, except my fuel milage seems to have dropped. If that sensor thingy regulates fuel flow, would it cause a rich mixture, maybe like leaving the choke on?? Also, on my 97 the 6" long 4" exhuast tubing put my filter past the brake master cylinder tubing thus stopping the vibration throught the brake pedal. Thanks to who ever gave the suggestion about the 6" tubing.

I noticed the same thing. I wonder if adapting the sensor to plug into the end of the filter would make a difference or not.
