Idealy, the tread width should be as close to the rim width as possible. This keeps the tread flat across the contact patch. As your tread width begins to exceed the rim width the tire begins to buldge more in the center of the tread. This not only causes the tire to wear more in the center than on the edges but it also causes uneven contact pressure. This means less overall traction and control. Good luck.
I've got pics in my gallery, BFG 315/75/R16 on stock wheels, no unusual treadwear, except when I forgot to rotate them. Got almost 30K on the tires right now.
I have a set of LT305/70R-16/D2 OWL (30979) GY Wrangler AT/S on my steel wheels and added a Superlift TruSpeed speed sensor calibrator to bring the speedometer, transmission, and ABS sensors into sync.
i want to know the biggest tire you can fit on stockers
Check with the tire manufacturer as every tire is different even within the same manufacturer's tire lineup. For example Mickey Thompson Baja Claws in a 305/70R16 size is approved for a 7 to 10 inch wide rim, but their Baja MTX tire is approved for a 8 to 10 inch wide rim for the same size. A BFG AT or MT in that size is approved for a 8 to 9.5 rim whereas a Interco Trxus MT or STS is approved for a 8.5 to 10 inch rim.
Granted there is some leeway in these figures as I contacted BFG about running my 285/75R16 tires on our stock 7 inch rims when they recommend a 7.5 rim as the minimum and their tech approved it and even gave me some baseline air pressures to start with.
