Intermittent Cranking
I have a '94 4X4 V6 4.0L Ranger with 120,000 miles that has an intermittent cranking problem for the last year. It turns over but doesn't catch when the car is hot. In cooler weather, I could wait about 45 minutes and it would crank. Right now, it takes several hours before it'll crank, if it cranks at all. Four mechanics have looked at it but told me they need the car to fail. Naturally, when a mechanic is around it cranks every time. A computer diagnostic showed no error codes. The fuel pump and fuel relay switch have been replaced. It's been about 20,000 miles and pre-problem since a major tune-up (plug wires,etc). It seems to be heat related in that the problem was minimized in the winter but is much worse in warmer months (like now!).
Any ideas GREATLY appreciated. I've been stranded in some sketchy places because it's so unpredictable.
