Does anyone have personal experiences (both good and bad) on a particular tire for their Excursion? I was looking for a tire that gives a quiet ride and was durable as far as mileage. Most of my driving will be in warm or moderate climates. Thanks, JIM
I am using Michelin on my 2000 X. I had no problem with the Firestones that came on it, But they are not my favorite. I will say not to put Dunlop Rover XVRT on an X due to the sidewalls are not stiff and tend to cause sway. I use my X for towing a 33' Travel Trailer so I am using E ply tires.. I am running 265/75/16E Michelin LT4 tires and have had no problem, but they are not cheap by any means.. That is my 2 cents....
I have a 2002 4x4, V10. I had original "d" load steeltex tires replaced under recall. I now have Bridgeston Dueller A/T - REVO's in "E" load. I love the tire so far.. Quiet on the highway, wonderful wet traction and is rated very high for snow <which I get alot of> Check out some web resources like Tire Rack for consumer feedback and ratings.. you may fnd some helpful advice or comparisons..
I had my steeltex tires replaced under the recall with the new E rated steeltex and I do not like them. They wander all over the place tracking on any groove in the road. It was fine prior to the new steeltex but the day I got the new ones I couldn't believe the difference. I would love to replace them but I'm too cheap....I just deal with it.
Just put Michelin LTX A/S 265/75R16E on my wife's 2001 Excursion PSD 2wd. Nice tire. This model was blackwall, no OWL. Got it at Wal-Mart $165.38 per tire.
BF Goodrich All Terrain TA K/O's only. No other tire makes the cut! Great wet traction, Greeeaatttt snow traction, Great stopping, all around on two different trucks and X, over 200,000 plus combined miles, not a failure in any of them! Why consider anything else? They are truely very tough tires and seem to cover all situations that I have been in and never failed me. They did improve the sway that the X seemed to have with the Firestones and are quiet enough so that they don't bother me. My 2 cents!
I put a set of FUTURA DAKOTA LT 285/75 16 on my X and they lasted forever. I rotated them every time I changed the oil and they still have 12000 miles left after 45000 miles of driving. Nice all terrain tred design and not too noisy on the road. got them from pep boys for $480.00 mounted balanced and road hazzard and lifetime balancing and rotation.
If I were going to go with a 265 or 285 tire I would go with Bridgestone Dueller REVO. I added a 2" lift on my 04' Excursion 4x4 6.0PSD Limited and went with a 305/70/16 & they look great. I thought about going with a 295/75/16 which is 1" taller & 1" narrower but there is a limited selection of tires in that size. With a 2.5" lift you could probably fit a 315/70/16 but that is getting pretty wide to fit on stock rims so you will probably need new wheels also.
I just put on 315 75R16 BFG ATs on the stock wheels. I've been through 2 sets of the steelex and one set of Goodyear MTRs (don't do that). I love the BFGs. I have F-350 springs up front and 4 inch blocks in the rear.

I am thinking of changing the 265/75/16 Steeltex load range E's for REVO's (2000 Excursion, V10, 4.30 gearing). I'd like to go to the 285 tire, but that size is available in load range D, not the E. The original tire specs for the Excursion was for load range D, but after the recall, E's were installed. Any thoughts on using the load range D REVO's (the 265/75/16 is available in E)? Also, does any one have any first hand experience in handling changes and, perhaps, mileage increases in going from 265/75/16 to 285/75/16?
