Due to recent events (no trouble with the law or anything) I may have to move to Canada, namely B.C. What kind of steps would be involved if the choice has to be made? Packing up my stuff, driving across the border, and yelling "I'm here!" doesn't seem like that great of a plan. Would having a passport help?
That's correct....if you had work lined up & the employer was involved it would make things a lot easier.
This country needs people, especially those that are self-sufficient.
It seems to me that if you come to the country with $250,000 to invest in a business, they will let you right in. Half of Hong Kong moved here that way before it was taken over by mainland China. They mostly moved back tho, after they discovered that the Chinese were gonna let Hong Kong continue "business as usual".
It's roughly the same moving from there to here, or here to there IF you are starting a business. So long as your business is making money and paying taxes, everything is hunky dory.
There are over 80,000 eligible voting US citizens in Calgary alone, employed by the Oil industry, mostly, so if your employer sponsors you in, you have very few problems, but again it's like the States. You are not SUPPOSED to be taking over any job that could be filled by a red-blooded Canadian.
And sell your guns. Especially handguns. They will be a huge hassle for you coming here.
Only Criminals are allowed to have guns here.
Good luck and welcome to Canader, eh?

The way this country is I think you are making a smart move. If I would of had the forsight 35 years ago I would be there also. I tell young people today that if they are smart they will get a college degree and head to a different country, preferably Canada. I visit with people from Canada alot as they travel here in the winter months. They are a great bunch of people.
We have a family friend who is a tour and hunting guide up in B.C. Most of his clients come in through Smithers. I would start out working for him as a horse driver. I'd ride horseback while taking other pack horses and such from camp to camp, depending on where customers need them. These would be hundreds of miles each trip through the wilderness. I think I would eventually get my pilot's license and start flying a float plane. Not the grandest of ambitions, but it might be my only real option left to me if it comes up that I have to move.
in the old days you could come here as a tourist/draft dodger and find a job. all you needed was a letter from an employer to prove you had a job and "employment and immigration" would give you landed immigrant status and a social insurance number.
we moved here in 1980 and i walked around for years with a moldy carbon copy of an immigration form typed up at the calgary airport on our arrival. kind of an oddity whenever i had to use it for something since most people don't wait more than the required 3 years to become citizens, but i used that piece of paper for everything, drivers license, register for college, drive to the USA.
i didn't become a citizen until america began charging 6$ to foreigners crossing their northern border and i wanted a canadian ID card. even though swearing allegiance to the queen of england would leave a bad taste in anyone's mouth, its worth it to have a canadian passport. easy passage to the USA, immunity from decapitations
still plenty of shortcuts though if you're in a real hurry to come to canada. lots of occupations in high demand that they'll fast tracy your application. or you can marry a canadian or bring your wife and have a baby here. but claiming refugee status isn't going to work. canada considers america a friendly country. you'll just have to tough it out for 4 more years. if alec baldwin can do it so can you
