Question 427 ?s

Okie doke. I've got a curious head on me tonight....Here's my question- does the 427 SOHC "cammer" use the same cross bolt main BLOCK as the standard 427? Obviously the heads are different, and timing cover and pretty much the whole front of the motor would be altered......But the BLOCK??

Cammer blocks had extra oil return holes in the back of the block to drain oil from the heads. They are not technically necessary because the oil can be drained externally. A basic 427 block can be built into a cammer with no other issues.

No other issues, aside from impending poverty

I'm actually feeling old this week. Too many beers on Halloween night, along with something called Jager-Bombs, can't quite recall how many I consumed. Monday sucked all the way until tuesday!

Before I had too much to drink, I did impress my friends with the project truck on some remote backroads of Texas :-) It's pretty quick for a big old truck....I should be working that carb and going to the track tonight, but I ended up working the yard instead...Almost blew myslef up on the mower. small fuel leak, blade came loose, sparks...you get the picture. Nothing actually ignited, but I sure got a scare.

It's the unfortunate byproduct of a bored, lonely, reasonably well-funded man-child in a mid-life crisis :-) I'm currently half through this sabbatical (2 months paid time off). It will be a miracle if I get through this without injuring myself or getting divorced. Last night I burnt everything I could find to burn and me and my neighboor cleaned out the shop fridge of that unsightly beer....:-)

Thanks goodness most of this has not been recorded. I'd never be able to run for President :-)

Go W!

The cammer block was a sideoiler block. The sideoiler was a purpose designed block just for the cammer project. Sideoiling was taken form the Y block and Ford had it well down pat. Now there was a protype cammer produced in 64 that had a 2 bolt engine mount block and press in freeze plugs that appeared in some of the Hot Rod mags of the day. If it was a modified topoiler block who knows but the cammer we all know and love was based on the sideoiler block. Funny as FPP had a sideoiler kit for topoiler blocks to convert them to sideoilers. It was a series of tubes that were on the outside of the block that went into modified and drilled crossbolt maincaps. I see them these kits on eBay rarely as they have been long out of production. They are kinda cool though. G.

"Side-oiler" & "Top-oiler" refers to the point where the oil enters the mains...correct?

In the top oiler, the main gallery is the one in the center of the lifter valley. In the side oiler , it's the one running down the left side of the block. The side oiler also has the center oil gallery, but it's there to feed the lifters in a hydraulic block. Can't vouch for the solid lifter blocks, it's there, just not drilled more than likely. I have a side/center oiler block that's drilled as a center oiler, but also has the casting in place for the side oiler gallerys, they're just not drilled.
