'93 XLT 2.3L 5-sp manual, 145k miles so far. Still getting the same mileage as when I bought it at 17k miles, 25 mpg during the summer, 20 during the winter.
I would like to help you if I could figure out what your trying to ask or say. Try maybe getting spellcheck for your computer. Re-post and I'm sure you'll get responses.
Just thought I would post and see how many high mileage 2.9s and 2.3s there are out there. My 2.9 has 175k on it and still runs fine. I saw where some had head cracking problems and wondered if different years were more likely to have problems. When you post please tell the year it is and if you've had any major work done.
Jeff
I'm running 2 94's. One has 5sp (2.3) with the spark problem (mistermoose)it has 173500 miles and no other problems. I still avg. 150 miles aday..
The other is auto with 2.3 and 154,000. Just rebuilt tranny for a thousand dollars. It runs ok but has no power. Took the 150# camper shell off last week and it did make a lil' differnece in pick-up from a dead stop...I better not give another person a ride if I want pwr take-off.
Love my rangers!
As of now my 89 Ford Ranger has counted 237,423 miles. I am the second owner of the truck, and it was bought at 88,000. Since I have owned it, I have installed only an oil pump, feul pump, and a water pump, all after 170,000. This truck has been a exceptional blessing to me, because I do a lot of travel, in city, and city to city as a school student. I now has some performance mods, and is still doing well. I want to see how far it goes but at the same time I also would like to rebuild the engine for some good performance, and customize it a little.
I am kind of stuck on that situation, because she runs so good right now.
i have an 87 ranger 4x4 2.9L super cab stx 5 speed. it has over 165000 miles. it runs like it is brand new. I have had to put a new bumper and an exaust system in it that is all i change oil every 3000 miles. i have only had it in the shop once and that was for a bad cable fron the battery. I love the truck. I get between 15 and 25 miles to the gallon. It starts great in the winter and runs like a dream in the summer. drive it just about every day.
Hey, I waited until my 92/2.3 had 326,000 on it before i turned it into a 5.0 and the olny thing wrong with it is the pressure plate finally wore out.I really love this truck...
1991 4x2 Supercab 3.0L 5spd STX. Just turned 200,000 miles this week and runs great. Few problems to speak of, one clutch disc and pilot bearing and A/C seals disappeared last year. The only real mods have been a bigger set of leaf springs and heavy duty shocks for trailer-ing. I have always held a very TIGHT maintenance schedule. Best vehicle I have ever owned...PERIOD!! The only true complaint I have is the rust that is now overtaking the left rear wheel well. It is now quite extensive and depressing. Rest of the truck looks damn good except for that side. I see this on alot of Rangers but still others, even older than mine, don't have this rust. What's the story on this? VERY TOUGH TRUCK FOR ITS SIZE! The best option on this truck has been the lumbar support for both driver and passenger. Long trips are much easier in this vehicle than are other Ford,Windstar. That thing beats me up. I crawl out of that wagon after 300 miles crippled and ready for a quack-o-practor. My Ranger..560miles from St.Louis to Northern Cheeseland...and all I need is a ice cold Point Special Bock and a bag-o-curds and life is good! Great to see others with similar stories.
My mileage isn't too high, 115K, a few latent issues but not bad. I bought it in '99 with 93K (it's a '94), the previous owner clearly had little respect for it. I've had to replace my clutch, the spark plugs were quite clearly the originals (it's underpowered anyway; before I changed the plugs it was downright scary), new wheel bearings. But all in all not too bad.
it has 148,000 miles, and i have put about 4,000 miles on it since i got it in feb 2001. it has been through many owners before me
i live in central n.y. and the weather and highway dept. sanders have
taken their toll on the body over the years so it is not in like new condition obviosly.from my observations i have noticed all hoses,
shocks, all body, and drivetrain parts, fuel tank, and most other small parts that i havent mentioned are original.since ive had it ive done the following repairs on it 2 new tires, new plugs and wires, patch small leak under strap for fuel tank, replace fuel tank strap(1),replace(2)tailgate support straps.the only complaints that i have aremy horn wont work now because of a bad connection on the back of the steering wheel, but im in the process of fixing it now. i think the tires are too small for the truck, and there isnt enough room for somebody that is 5 foot 11in tall to sit comfortably in the cab.
overall though it runs good with the exeption of the very faint noisy valve.oh and if i havent mentioned it f o r d s
r u l e ! !
Here’s my high-mileage story:
Bought a brand-new ’90 Ranger S in November of ’90, for $7600. In retrospect, the only new vehicle I could have bought for less money was a Yugo. Back to the truck: Amana White, 2.3 liter, 5 speed, no options…I mean NO options. It still doesn’t have a radio in it, but the odometer now shows 212 thousand miles. It uses less oil now than when new, and seldom needs topping up between oil changes (every 3k, with a new filter each time). Here’s a list of maintenance and repairs:
Tires and brakes as needed.
1 new clutch.
New timing and serpentine belts, radiator hoses, at 80k and 211k.
New heater hoses at 211k.
2 batteries.
2 starters.
1 throttle position sensor (the only item that I don’t consider routine mainenance).
Air and fuel filters as needed.
1 each, left and right-hand mirrors. (Very expensive OE, but I did it anyway. Shoulda bought better ones, even if it meant drilling for larger brackets.)
Tranny fluid changed twice.
2 thermostats.
2 radiator caps.
3 headlight bulbs.
2 taillight bulbs.
1 flasher unit.
1 driver’s side window (victim of vandal’s slingshot).
New shocks all around, at about 110k, replaced with cheapo aftermarket set.
Here are the little niggling problems the truck has…but I’m too lazy/cheap to fix/have fixed:
Missing headlight/taillight ****. Bought a replacement, but can’t figure out how to install it, without hauling the whole switch assembly out of the dash…or dropping the dash. Maybe if I had 10” fingers with eyes on each fingertip….
Busted seat. But at least the depression is shaped just like my behind, so it fits.
Notchy shifting. Improved with tranny fluid change, but still not silky-smooth as new.
Intermittent short in dash—sometimes fan doesn’t come on for defroster/heater. Drive it down the driveway, and the fan kicks in the first time you apply the brakes and come to a stop. Fan rpm also varies sometimes, according to engine rpm. A new battery might cure this?
In rain or moist conditions, runs a little rough for a couple of minutes. Runs fine when warmed up.
Sticky tailgate latch. Victim of abuse…don’t ask me how that piece of rope got jammed in the tailgate. Just yank to the right as you pull up the handle..it’ll go.
Slightly spongy brake action.
Broken detent spring in driver’s door hinge. Door swings shut if driver’s side is uphill.
Passenger-side inside door handle came adrift. I disassembled it, to find the pivot pin had simply slipped out of place…pushed it back in, works fine.
3 chips in windshield from flying highway debris, misc. chips in paint, none of which are so large as to require touch-up…yet.
I installed the starters, batteries, bulbs, and did the other easy stuff, like oil and filter changes. The rest of the work was done by at a friend’s shop. All in all, it’s been a very dependable vehicle. Never stranded me (lucky break there…both times the starter puked, it happened at home). There was a slight coolant leak at the front of the head, but it looks like the Bars Leaks is working…no measurable coolant loss in two crossings of the Mojave Desert a few weeks back.
For any stat weenies out there: I’m a writer, living in San Diego, CA, now 42 years old, married, no kids. Truck has been used to haul dirt and street motorcycles around.
Wife's 1990 XLT 2.9 has 159000 miles on, factory clutch, only probs we've had were the water pump at 112000 miles, and a cracked head at 130000 miles. Plus the bad 1990 paint that is coming off. Other than that, it has been wonderful. All we need now is some new seat cushions and it will feel as good as new.
