So I am new to the Diesel World. I have a 93 F250 7.3 w/169,000 miles. I took it into the shop for an oil change and i requested a fuel filter change as well.....Until they quoted me $145.00 !!!!! Then I declined. So why is it so expensive? It is just a screw on type. Can I bleed the air myself. How hard is it. Any pointers? Also how hard is it to change the GP's? Just looking ahead. Winter is coming fast in the PACNORWEST! I am pretty good with gas burning motors but diesel is a new world for me. BTW what is up with diesel fuel prices???? Almost $2.40 a gallon here. Thanks
$145 for just a filter change!!!!!! Or did they mean oil, filter&fuel filter? It will take 10 quarts of oil to do the change,so its just as well to buy a case.A fuel filter is around $25(here anyway). Its not that hard to do it all yourself. To bleed after a filter change, all you do is hold in on the shrader valve(looks like a tire valve) on the filter head and have someone crank the engine untill you have a steady stream of fuel(do not over work the starter,12-15 secs of cranking and wait 5 mins, repeat as needed) Fill the new filter with clean fuel 1st,dont use the fuel from the old one. It is a good idea to unplug the fuel shut off sol on the injection pump, its the wire closest to the front of the pump, almost right on top of it.The glo plugs are not hard especially on a non turbo.
Glow plugs are very easy to change, just get a 3/8 deep well socket and twist em out but make sure to use an air gun to blow away the crap first so it doesnt fall in the heads. I made the mistake of replacing one of the plugs with an Autolite and I am going to find out how big of a mistake it was when I replace it with a Motocraft.
Hi, I find no problem changing the fuel filter. Just make sure you fill it up before you screw it on and you will have no problem.
For the glow plug, I agree, go motorcraft only, beru type. They are easy to test, just remove the wire and check the ohm resistance, you should have at the most 1 or 2.
I live in the Pacific North West also, and have a 1985 6.9l and just got a fuel filter for it for $11.00, but I hear the filter on the 7.3 is different.
get a baldwin bf1222 it will make life a lot simpler, all the 6.9's and the 7.3 idi's i have ever seen have the same filter. that factory one with the aluminum housing is junk in my book, the 1222 doesn't have a aluminum bowl.
I agree with 89ford73. Get the BF1222 and don't even bother trying to seal that aluminum 'small frisbee' back to the filter. I found the drain falls off those after 1 or 2 kilometers of regular driving anyway.
Up here (canada, eh?) the BF1222 costs me about $40 each.
I usually put the 93-94 IDI turbo diesel oil filter on both my running trucks, even though the one is a non-turbo '91 IDI 7.3L. The difference is the depth of the oil filter. The turbo diesel is about 1 inch longer then the non-turbo. I figure the little extra oil in the filter is not a problem for me.
As well, I only have to buy one model number (cannot remeber the number) for a oil filter and that is that.
Do NOT buy anything but the beru type glow plugs. Again, up here they are like 13 bucks a piece at the dealer. Well worth the money.
dang, i get them all day long for 17 bucks a pop, in us dollars, but im sure with the rice difference or whatever, 40 is still kinda steep seems like. could be wrong. but i get em in texas for 17 bucks a pop. there are some threads about running the powerstroke oil filters on the old 7.3's and 6.9's, the owerstroke is a little bigger than an inch longer im pretty sure, they have the part number, or just tell them you want a big filter for a powerstroke and they will look it up for you
