severe np435 grinding

I have a 1977 Ford F250 equipped with a NP435 4 speed tranny. There is a lot of grinding in 3rd gear and 4th gear at both low and high speed. Sometimes the tranny will not even shift into 4th when it is cold outside. But the grinding is very loud and has a high pitch. Should I tear it down and check it out or just forget about it and spend the $250 at the junk yard for another one? ANy suggestions would be great. Thanx.

NP435 grinding

Awsum77,my 435 was making the same noise so I pulled it and found the imput shaft bearing was toast.I got a rebuild kit from Jeffs Bronco Graveyard and had the box rebuilt by a professional tranny shop and all is well now.

Mine is doing the same thing, I bought a low mileage tranny and am haveing a friend swap it out in a few weeks. I let you know what was wrong with the old one when I get it back.
