Wink Bell Housing Question

A friend reciently bought a 61 pick up with a 240 Six that needs rebuilding. I am encourging her to replace it with a later model 300 six. My question is, are the bell housing for the 61 240 the same as the later model 300s? I also noticed that the intake on her truck is on the left or drivers side of the engine and on later models it is on the right (passenger side) Are these two engines from two different engine familys? Educate me on these engines. I am pretty well versed on the Ford V-8 engines but have never messed with the I-6 engines.

I think your friend has a 223.

Says 240 & 300 came out in '65.

Not sure about bell housing...., better minds will chime in.

I dont have any answers, just the same question. I have a 66' with a 240 and would like to take it to a 300; wondering how close of a fit it is for mounts and such.

240 and 300 are identical motors, except for crank, rods, pistons and head. The block is the same, indestinguishable. You can bolt up a 300 block to your old bellhousing with zero trouble. Assuming of course that you DO have a 240. The 240/300 arrived in 65. Getting them into a 61 would be a major job that is seldom seen.

Red face

The man she bought the truck from said it was a 240. I am beginning to have my doubts that it is a 240 because of what you guys are saying and also because of the way the intake is set up. Also the fuel pump is located on the right (passenger side) of the engine dead in the middle of the block.

I think your friend has a 223.
I think I would have to agree that you are right about the engine being a 223

You're right in that the engine is most likely a 223. This was the only ford I6 family (215/223/262) to have the intake/exhaust on the driver's side, unless someone swapped in a ch*vy six. The 223 uses a different bellhousing than the 240/300 (same as the Y-block V8 I belive). You'd have to change the engine mounts & bellhousing, but others have done the 300 swap. You're other option is to try (!) to find a 262, which would drop right in. The 262 is very hard to find though.

Thumbs up

I knew you guys would come through, all of you have been most helpful. At least we now have a place to start from. My personal opinion is that she should junk the 223 and start with a fresh 300, I am certain that it would not be that hard to fab front mounts for it. Acutally she does have another option, she owns a 87 Ford stationwagon that has a good 302 in it with a AOD behind it. The car is worth no more than probably a thousand dollars, so it would not be beyond reason to part the drive train out for use in her truck.

Thanks again for all of your wonderful help,
Michelle
