I just purchased an F-150 1976 Pickup. On the keychain (original) it says that the truck is a "Texas Special."
What does that mean? I can't find it anywhere.
It's a two tone tan, with an extra cool interior, (headliner and upolstry)
390 c.i. engine the previous owner said, but when I went to put belts on it, none of the ones called for fit except for the AC belt, and had to be measured. Does anyone know where I can find out more?
what about a vin search?
I've never heard of it either - but I'm not in Texas... Is it anywhere else, besides the keychain? What makes you think the keychain came with the pickup? Could it have been a dealers logo in '76? Just tossing out a couple options...
Here is some stuff I have found. Ford Vin badges are different than I am use to.
Here goes.
VIN: F15JUBXXXXX
F15: F150
J: 460 ci
U: Louisville
WB: 133 - ?
Color: 46 - two tone brown?
Type: F150
Body: KU4 - ?
Trans: G - ???? (the book says something about C6?)
Axle: 14J - ?
Max GVW lbs. 06050 - is this good?
1976: year
52: ?
Note: I have never seen such a huge radiator. also there seems to be, not just one, but two extra cooler (Transmission?) up front.
The only "Specials" I can locate are trailering and hauling specials.
the camper specials had big fat radiator and 460s, Ive got a buddy up in washington that has a stock '78 f150 camper special... go figure. I dont know why they bothered making a half ton CS. but theres a few out there, they are not much more than a heavyier half or a standard light duty 3/4 ton nothing remotely like the scs in the 3/4 and 1ton varities. its all in the axles brakes suspention hardware its equiped with and gvw its rated at. but they had the trans cooler and PS cooler big rad. and 460/C6 combo like the bigger ones.
Seymourmike, look in my gallery. Is your truck the same color/have the same interior as mine? From the way you describe it sounds about the same. As far as I know my truck is not a Texas Special, just a Ranger Lariat.
I can remember seeing a brochure on the "Texas Special" back in the '70s, when as a kid I would sometimes hang out at my cousin's dealership where my father works. I can't remember the exact year, but I do remember it was a package available to Texas dealers only, and included a leather seat w/ some kind of steer horn logo embossed on it. It was only available in the one color combination that you described. I have been searching for that brochure for many years, to no avail. I can remember asking why if you had the money in hand, why someone from Connecticut couldn't order one. Ford used to offer various "special" packages for certain regions back then, and you couldn't order one from outside your area. I'm thinking it's likely that the brochure I saw was 1978 or '79, since I was closer to driving age then, and really paid attention to the new trucks. It was a single page, and may have only illustrated the interior. Can you send pictures of your truck?

The Lariat package was actually introduced in 1976, but was called the XLT Luxury Group. I have never seen one, but I do have literature on it. They could be ordered w/ Tan Glow, Autumn Tan, or Polar White exterior, but only tan interior. Interesting also, the steering column and wheel were also painted tan. The same package was available for 1977.
