Car overdrive transmissions. Can someone tell me how these things work. Are they an automatic with overdrive? Are they a stick with overdrive? Will these fit a truck? Just curious because I have seen a few floating around and at some point want to get a higher final drive ratio. I have read about the T5 conversion and that seems pretty straight forward with the kit from flat o matic. I just wonder if one of these would come closer to being a bolt up conversion. I am also keeping my eyes out for a F7 with the overdrive gearing.
i was just looking apost called putting your truck away for winter. in that post a guy a called abuquerque f1 has a posting. get on his gallery because he has pictures of a od trannie. plus he has an email address so you could contact him, and find out all about it. i used to have an od trannie in my 55 ford but that was many, many years ago. i also don't know about the availablility of them. but that should be a start. 57 trucker. ps. his post is just a little ways above yours.

OD's come in several configurations. The early Ford Built manual OD had a special tail assembly added to a stock 3spd and the OD was controlled by a solenoid. Later ones by BW and Ford were all gear driven in the main box. These were 3 spd + OD.
The T5 is a 4spd + OD but is not known for torque ability; even the WC for the 302 HO is only rated to 300 ft lbs.
Automatics such as the AOD and later electronic versions are available and adaptable. However setup is extremely critical or failure can be measured in blocks, not miles.
An external OD is available for the C4 and some others from Gear Vendors. Not cheap but indestructible.
And there are even adaptors to utilize GM and Jap trannys!
Christopher, I have a GearVendors OD unit on my 56 and love it. I can switch it between gears and actually make the truck a 6 speed but usually just kick it in as a 4th gear. I've got a 3.91 rear gear; quick out of the hole and decent on the highway, too.

I am not sure the gear vendors unit is worth $3000.00 to me. I could put in a T5 and get a perfect ring and pinion ratio for under $500.00. I do not plan on doing any real hauling with this truck.
