Blowing a fuse

I have a 2000 7.3 PS. My 10 amp fuse keeps blowing that protects the Auxiliary Power train Control Module (APCM) Instrument Cluster, GEM Module, Overdrive Cancel Switch, Idle Validation Switch, Overhead Console, Diesel PCM via Clutch. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

I hooked up my Superchips Micro Tuner to the truck and got 3 codes. <o></o>

1. PO381 Glow plug indicator circuit error<o></o>

2. PO221 Throttle Pos. Sensor/Switch B circuit range/perf.<o></o>

3. P1139 Water in Fuel Indicator circuit error.<o></o>

Could you please tell me what I could check and what might be wrong. I will probably end up taking it to the Ford dealership, but I want to be somewhat educated before I arrive, hopefully to keep from having some dealership rip offs that happens these days. You know where they fix the stuff that isn’t broken to run up the bill.<o></o>

I have read many of the forums and know that there are many very talented people with the answers. Thanks in advance. <o></o>

Can you post what fuse number is blowing so I can trace it out in my manuals? My first thoughts are have you recently disassembled anything lately around any wiring? I have seen many times where consoles ect are taken out and during reinstallation a wire is pinched and causes a short.

It's the number 19 fuse under the driver's side dash. It's a 10 amp. The obvious that happens when this fuse blows is that the guages go dead and the accelerator is non functional. I can floor it and no rev at all. The truck stay at idle.

Does it blow the fuse right away when you plug it in?

Not right away. Most of the time, it's when I shift into drive. The new fuse may last a week or two or it might last 10 minutes. I thought there might be something in the steering column that it was rubbing against when the gear shift control was moved. Just don't know.

Check the wiring through your column shifter going to your OD cancel switch (assuming you have an auto trans). My 2001 SD was blowing the same fuse last week and I found a little nick in the power wire where it goes into the shifter tube. Be careful if you take it apart though, as the wires are very delicate. Hope this helps.

I agree with DHH it could be the wiring going to the OD switch. I have also had these wires get cut at the end of the shifter. Let us know what you find.

What is and where is the OD cancel switch? I do most of my own work, when possible, but I do not know many of the names. I have never had a diesel before but if someone points at the item, I can usually get it done. Thanks for the responses so far. Keep them coming. Have a great day.

Okay, I did a little thinking and it has stand for the overdrive cancel switch. So where is the od cancel switch?

Assuming you have an automatic, it's on the end of your gear shift lever. It's just a little button on the end of the lever that you push to turn OD on or off.

Like farmboy has stated above the OD switch is at the end of the shift lever. What you are looking for is the very fine gauge wiring that goes inside the shift lever that goes to the button and in order to get to it you are going to have to remove the steering column covers. I bet your problem is right where your shift lever pivots on the steering column.

You guys are very much appreciated for sharing your knowledge on this subject.

That makes a lot of sense that the OD wire placed where it is would take a lot of wear and tear. So you are saying that that wire is connected to the same circuit that the 10 amp fuse is protecting in the instrument cluster and the accelerator?

Yes it is connected to the same curcuit fuse 19.

How do I get the ignition out of the socket so as to get the top cover off of the steering column?
You guys have got me excited about the possibilities of the OD wire being the problem, but I can't see the end of the shift tube from the bottom. I suppose I have to have the top off and the ignition is holding me back. I took my parents' out of there GM motorhome one day by turning on the key to a certain position and it came right out. Doesn't seem to be working on the Ford the same way. Help please?

Ok now what you need to do is take the bottom cover off and you will see a hole with a pin under the key switch on the column housing, you have to push in the pin and have the key in the run position and pull it out. To reinstall it just have the key tumbler in the run position and line it up and push it back in.

THIS IS FOR REALHP, DHH, AND FARMBOY. YOU GUYS ARE THE FIRST AND BEST!

I REMOVED THE COVERS TO EXPOSE A WIRE GOING TO MY OD CUTOFF SWITCH. IT WAS TWISTING AROUND OTHER WIRES AND RIGHT WHERE IT GOES AROUND A METAL PART OF THE SHIFTER, THERE WAS A WORN SPOT ABOUT AN EIGHTH OF AN INCH. ALMOST EXACTLY WHERE YOU GUYS SAID IT WOULD BE. I WRAPPED IT WELL WITH BLACK TAPE AND PUT EVERYTHING BACK TOGETHER. <O</O

I THEN, RAN IT THROUGH THE GEARS TRYING TO MAKE IT SHORT OUT BUT NO PROBLEM SO FAR. I AM CONFIDENT THAT IT WAS THAT AND ONLY THAT CAUSING ALL OF THE TROUBLE.<O</O

SO AGAIN, I JUST WANT TO SINCERELY THANK YOU GUYS FOR BEING THERE WHEN I CALLED OUT FOR HELP. YOU PROBABLY SAVED ME A COUPLE OF HUNDRED DOLLARS BY KEEPING IT OUT OF THE SHOP.<O</O
