Timing chain guide
First, let me introduce myself. I'm Duncan from England and have a 99 Explorer 4.0 SOHC "The North Face" model, with leather A/C etc.
My first engine died at 60000 miles due to a fault in the oil pump drive, so I found a 40000 miles replacement unit.
As a precaution, I took off the sump and found two small pieces of yellowy/orange plastic about 1/2 inch wide and slightly curved. The plastic looks to be the same material as the timing chain tensioner/guides, but I cannot match the exact profile.
I have read about the improved tensioner/guides and wonder if perhaps the original guide broke up and was replaced - the sloppy mechanic leaving some of the old bits behind.
Do you have any information on the difference between the old guides and the new ones?
Thank you
Yes that is probably what it is. They did the same thing on my truck and yes if that tensioner fails, it will knock a hole in your valve cover. If they did the mod, the chain tensioner will look like a small cylendrical part sticking out of your head with a hex shaped bottom nearest the head. The old one just looks like a bolt screded into the head with a 27mm hex head on it.
