Lost my oil going down the road and my stones in the driveway are oil soaked. Came home from work and thought my tires stunk. Truck was fine. This morning noticed the stones all wet looking with a sunny day in the 90's. Duh? Checked the oil. Gone. Ran down the side of the engine where the oil filter is and to the cross arm thing to the driver side tire. Dripped off of the tranny casting lines uck. Took the Purolater Pure One filter off, put a Motorcraft back on and put oil in the fill thing. When I put 4 quarts in I checked the stick and it was above the fill line 1/4 inch so I drained it out to between min and max. So I still had 1 1/2 quarts in it. Do not see any thing leaking yet. I asked the guy at Advance where the oil sending unit is and it looks dry. Could it have been the filter over time? Did it die? (this last couple of days) 960 miled on the oil change.
Also the bolt was tight and no oil around it wet or anything.
Almost the same thing happened to my wife's 1990 2.9 V6 ranger. The oil sending unit is on the opposite side of the oil pan from the drain plug. When the sending unit went bad, it let all the oil drain out. I would definitely check this as a possible culprit.
I just got up. There is oil wet spot on my cardboard under the truck. It is also wet on the bottom of the oil pan (a little). I wiped everything off in case it is a drip from putting new oil and filter on. I am drinking my coffee. Soon to ride around the block. If it is still there after the ride, I guess I am going to go take a trip to the dealers. Let you all know soon.
I went to the dealer. The man put dye into the oil. Little bottle. He said ride around. If and when it leaks again the dye will show. Cool I said. Unless of course I have a huge leak. Will keep everyone updated. Maybe it was just a pinhole in the filter or a scrunched gasket. Who knows right now.
Hi Gail;
I have a little 1998 Ford Ranger 4 cylinder with a 5 speed. I took it in to a Pennzoil place to get my oil changed, (something I do every 3,000 miles) and the last time I took it in? I guess the guys didn't tighten something and it leaked oil all over the road out front where I park it! Golly was I mad! Hope this helps and hope your little Ranger is ok Have a great day! Sincerely, Brenda Joan
If it's leaking around the filter area, pull the filter and check for an old filter gasket stuck on the mounting flange. Sometimes the rubber gasket sticks to the motor when the filter is pulled off and when you spin the new one on you get two rubber gaskets squished together trying to hold back oil pressure. Also, rub some clean oil on the gasket of the new filter to keep this from happening.
Hope this helps.

I go to the Dealers on th 28th. They will put the light on it. So far since I changed the filter and oil, I haven't had any more drips. I keep the cardboard under the truck just in case but it has been 4 days.
Yipee... Thank you everyone for your help. It must have been the filter. I took my truck to the dealer on the 28th. They UV'd the engine and no leaks. They also replaced my seatbelt that is still under warranty (it went back slow), and I had them check the parking brake.
I'm in business again. Thank you from now on I am going to check for the second gasket and be more careful to check the oil at least once a week.
