'96 Ranger - O/D won't function
My 1996 Ford Ranger, 2WD, Auto, won't shift into overdrive when I reach higher speeds. After reaching higher speeds, shifting (in city) between 1st and 2nd becomes rough. As soon as I stop the engine and start it up again, shifting between 1st and 2nd returns to normal. What's up?

I have recently changed the fluid, which looked fine when I drained it. The O/D OFF light flashes on and off once I reach higher speeds, and that, too, goes away after I turn off the truck and start it up again. I don't know what CEL means, but the ABS light doesn't come on either. What does CEL mean? The vehicle has 102,000+ miles on it. Any thoughts? Do I just need a new tranny?

It sounds like a electronic problem. I would have the codes pulled, Autozone does it for free. If you don't find anything you may have to have a scanner hooked up while it is driven under those conditions to pick up the problem. CEL = check engine light.

I have a 3.0L 1996 Mazda 2WD with 68K that had a similar problem about 3000 miles back. The O/D light was going on and off and wouldn't go into the higher gears. I took it tranny shop and the soleniod was bad. $300 bucks later it works fine.
