Hey gang...my daughter's 2001 Explorer Sport has a persistent rough idle. When cold, like when sitting overnight, startup idle is very erratic and engine usually dies. After a few restarts engine will run smooth. Once engine is warmed up no idle problems at all. A month ago her check engine light came on. Had a scan done a local Ford dealership and scan indicated a faulty MAF sensor. Checked this forum and did the recommended maf sensor remove and cleaned w/electrical contact cleaner and reinstalled. Same problem. 2 or 3 weeks later check engine light came on again. Had scan done a local Auto Zone. Scan indicated:lean engine-bank one, lean engine-bank two. So checked forum again and found the IAC repair and removed and cleaned IAC. Same problem. At this point, I had to make a decision as my daughter was getting ready to drive from Texas to her new job in Port St. Lucie, Florida. So I went and bought from my local Ford dealer a new MAF sensor and new IAC valve. Installed both and you guessed it, same rough idle at cold startup. And thoughts out there on cause of rough idle when cold?
On my 2000 w/4.0 SOHC I had the same problem. Dealer kept looking at the Map sensor and I changed the IAC. Ended up being the lower intake orings. Basicaly a vacume leak. Letting air into the engine that the computer wasen't reading thus the lean mixture codes. I changed the upper orings. But no change. Had a local mech do the lower ones and it did the trick. Not expensive at all if you don't count the labor for the lower ones. I think 10 bucks for the 8 orings.
"Not expensive at all if you don't count the labor for the lower ones"
I like this one. I feel better now. Since the lower intake gasket on my van is leaking coolant, to replace it, it is only a few dollars, if you don't count the labor.
The upper orings are between the plastic intake box (where your IAC sits) and the plastic intake manifold. The lower ones are under the manifold. Not an any injectors. The upper ones are two larger orings and I belive that the lower ones are eight smaller orings. I replaced the upper ones myself. Not to hard of a job but the lower ones did'nt look fun so I had a local mech replace them.
