What do the chip programmers actually do?

Hi -
I am curious. I bought an Edge Revolution for my 94.5 PSD, and was wondering exactly how it goes about improving performance. I have noticed more black smoke out the tailpipe after applying "race". I assume that is more fuel being dumped inth the engine. Am I right, and what else is happening??

Thanks!

Oh, I also keep getting a diag. code that relates to keeping memory alive (or something like that). Any ideas, or should I even worry??

The tuners change the fuel/air ratio, timing and some other things that I can't think of right now.
The code you are getting is from the tuner. don't worry about it. It is the same thing as diconnecting the batterys.
Do you have a pyro guage? If not, I would not recommend using any tuner or chip without a pyro. Your EGT's will go higher than you realize in a very short time.

I don't have gauges yet, and was thinking about reverting back to stock until I get them. I have only had the programmer a day, but I sure notice a difference after I programmed my truck. I am going out this evening, and am going to revert to stock before I drive the truck again.
Thanks!
