I dont understand why folks are bashing the poulan. I use it heavily many times each year in the woods too collect firewood. The only problem I had was the carb got clogged with crap and I had to take it apart and clean it on the spot, I lost about 2 hours I guess. Other then that it has worked flawlessly, it may be cheap but it works just fine. The key is keeping the chain sharp.
If you are looking for a good saw look at the Stihl, Husky, or Jonsreds. Poulan are a very cheap saw and don't last, a few people might get lucky but most don't. I had a rather large one, it was about 8 years old but very little use and kinda showed up for free. I fixed the carb, tuned it up, got it running perfect, threw on a 16" bar and chain I had (saw came with a 20" but no chain) It pretty much died as soon as the chain touched wood. Then I bought a 1 year old Stihl 034AV and fixed it. The Poulan went in the dump.
In my opinion, the mcculloch mac110 is the best saw ever made. It is light, dependable (well... sometimes) and powerful. my father bought this saw new in 1971 and i'd bet i could go outside and get it and it would start in five pulls or less. it hasn't been run in 3-4 years. I do small engine repair and i have a new craftsman 18". it is dependable, powerful and well balanced. I got it for free because someone never came back to pick it up after i fixed it, but i don't know if i would have bought it new. I think it sounds too wussy because it sounds like a leaf blower. anything and everything (riding mowers, trucks, chainsaws) sould be LOUD! I am 15 and my mom says That she thinks i'm going deaf because "EVERYTHING YOU OWN OUT THERE IN THAT GARAGE IS SOOO LOUD MY TEETH RATTLE"
BTW, I get my license in 12 days!!! aren't you excited???
my truck has been sitting in my driveway since april 2003 waiting for me. it gets driven twice a week though. look at my gallery and tell me what you think of it.
Just my two cents but I wouldnt buy anything but a Stihl or Husky just bought a new Stihl MS 361 last month what a cuttin machine if you buy a Stihl stay away from the odd #'s those are less af a saw than the even#'s the Husky Rancher or the 350 are both good light duty saws too. Keep in mind you get what you pay for. Plus if you ever want to sell it you will mostly get your $$ back out of a Stihl or Husky as long as it isnt all beat to snot. Try doin that with a Poulan.
Actually the Jonsreds have the same engine as the Huskys but are better built around the engine. We have a Jonsreds 920 (bought new in the early 80's as a logging saw) and we purchased it from the original owner with all documentation. It cuts better then most new saws. So if you check into Husky also check into the Jonsreds.
My brother-in-law gave me a 55 rancher, because it doesn't run. I'm going to see how much it costs to repair it.
What do you think is wrong with it. Keep in mind that they do have a 2 year warranty so it might not cost you a dime. I cut 3 cord of wood today and love the saw.
He said he bought it over 3 years ago. The mechanic at the chainsaw shop thinks it might be piston damage caused by the fuel mixture being too lean. He said it might cost about 100.00 if it's only the piston, but if the cylinder is damaged about 200.00. It runs fine until it gets warmed up then it shuts off.

I have that problem with my Stihl 026. But we have a problem we can't trust any of the dealers to fix the saw. So now that I have the Husky the Stihl can stay in the basement. Where it belongs. And a 100 bucks is not bad to fix that saw.
